Beyond the Jersey: Balancing Academics, Athletics, & Ambition
Leah Scheidel: A second-year student from Schuylkill Haven, PA, pursuing a major in Management and Trade.
Leah Scheidel began her basketball journey in high school, initially encouraged by her sister to try out for the team. Despite her initial hesitations, Leah embraced the sport and developed skills she could only dream of as a younger player. Now, as a college athlete at Penn State Schuylkill, Leah reflects on how basketball has been integral to her personal and professional growth.
For Leah, Penn State Schuylkill represented a fresh start and a chance to reset after exploring college life in the South. The decision to transfer proved to be a pivotal moment in her academic and athletic journey.
Leah credits basketball for teaching her crucial life skills, such as time management, resilience, and teamwork. However, the journey hasn't been without challenges. "The biggest challenge I faced as an athlete was overcoming my fear of failure and dealing with overtraining. I pushed myself to the point of injury because I was so focused on basketball. Eventually, I learned the importance of balance—not just in sports but in life overall."
This balance extends to her ability to juggle academics, athletics, and personal life. While she admits she hasn't perfected the art of multitasking, Leah approaches each day with determination and adaptability. "Even when you're trying to improve, you can't overwork your body because it can only handle so much stress on their bodies and minds and it WILL catch up to you" she says.
Leah's team at Penn State Schuylkill holds a special place in her heart. "I've made great friendships that I hope will last beyond sports and school. My team always brings a smile to my face after a long day, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play and be part of the athletic family here."
Reflecting on her experience as a dual-enrollment student and her journey to Penn State Schuylkill, Leah offers advice to others considering transferring schools: "If you're unhappy somewhere, then why would you stay and bring yourself down? I left my school in Florida and came to PA because it just wasn't where I was meant to be and I have been so much better off since leaving."
Leah aims to become a successful business owner, using her management and trade education to make a positive impact on others' lives. "Sports have shaped me into a person who can be a team player, be resilient, focus and achieve goals, be strong, and create time management skills" she explains.
Leah's story is one of resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to personal growth. Whether on the court or in the classroom, she continues to strive for success while cherishing the lessons learned along the way. For Leah, basketball isn't just a sport—it's a foundation for building a brighter future.
