Beyond the Jersey: Rooted in Faith, Driven by Passion
Philadelphia native Triniti Freeman, a third-year nursing major, is dedicated to leadership and community impact. She revitalized Penn State Schuylkill’s Black Student Union, connected with local NAACP chapters, and launched a Health Science Conference to address healthcare disparities. Recognized with Penn State’s 2024 Stand Up Award for Ethical Leadership, she also serves with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Philadelphia.
Triniti Freeman's journey to Penn State Schuylkill and the flag football field is deeply rooted in family, faith, and passion. Growing up in a household where football was more than just a game—it was a tradition—Freeman's love for the sport started early. "Football has always been the biggest sport for my family. My brothers played football and we would also watch it every Sunday faithfully. So I grew a lot of love for the sport at a very early age!" she shared. Though flag football wasn't available when she initially transferred, its arrival at Penn State Schuylkill was the perfect opportunity for her to get involved. "Now that it is here, it's up!"
Beyond the field, Freeman's college journey has been filled with significant achievements both academically and in leadership. She has made the Dean's List and received several prestigious awards, including the 2022-23 Rising Lion Award for her dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the FastStart Mentorship Award from University Park, and the 2023-24 Rock Ethics Award for her efforts in establishing The Black Student Union. Her commitment to DEI initiatives is a testament to her drive to create a more inclusive and supportive community for students of all backgrounds.
Her path to Penn State Schuylkill was not a direct one. Originally attending West Chester University as a biology major, Freeman realized it wasn't the right fit. Encouragement from her travel softball coach led her to explore Penn State campuses, and Schuylkill stood out for its nursing program, housing options, and financial support. "After literally looking at ALL the campuses that had nursing programs, Schuylkill stuck out the most because of the housing, the nursing program, and the grants/scholarships offered to me."
As she pursues a career in nursing, Freeman sees her athletic experiences playing a crucial role in patient care. "Since I will be caring for a variety of patients, I am sure I can connect with them about football in one way or the other! It is critical building rapport with patients, and 9 times out of 10, sports is often the best place to start." Her work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes also allows her to combine faith and sports, mentoring high school athletes to integrate faith into their athletic journeys.
Freeman takes on both offensive and defensive roles as a Wide Receiver and Safety, bringing her deep-rooted knowledge of football to the team. "Being able to share my knowledge and teach some things to some of my teammates who may not know the sport well is truly my favorite thing to do while on the team." However, being a student-athlete is not without challenges. Balancing academics, athletics, and personal life requires discipline and time management. "Being as though I am in my fourth year in college, I have to think about priorities and importance! Everything is important, yes! But prioritizing and time management is the true key." While planners don't work for her, a large whiteboard in her room helps her stay on top of responsibilities.
Freeman holds the Penn State Schuylkill athletics family in high regard, recognizing the passion and dedication of those who make the program special. "The athletics family is the best. They are very passionate about what they do and it shows not just through their work, but who they are and relationships they build with us athletes." To her coaches, teammates, trainers, and the entire athletic department staff, she has one message: "Y'all are all my besties and y'all know it <3."
At the core of her journey is her unwavering faith. "I am a believer in Christ and seeking Him in every decision and leaning on His understanding is a pivotal reason why I am here today (Matthew 6:33)." With faith as her guide, Freeman continues to shine both on and off the field, inspiring those around her with her leadership, perseverance, and passion for making a difference.
