Lions Split Night Doubleheader in Myrtle Beach Behind 10-Run Burst Against Beaver
Penn State Schuylkill exploded offensively in game one and split its Myrtle Beach night doubleheader with a 12-8 win over Penn State Beaver before falling 5-1 to Rockland CC.
Penn State Schuylkill opened the night in impressive fashion, using a huge early offensive surge to defeat Penn State Beaver, 12-8, in game one of the doubleheader.
The Lions struck right away in the first inning as Roman Cieless delivered an RBI single and Yostin Guerrero Solano added an RBI fielder's choice to make it 2-0. Andrew Klotz started the rally with a two-run double, Dan Zimmerman added an RBI single, and Guerrero delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a three-run home run to right field that pushed the lead to 10-0.
Penn State Beaver responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and kept chipping away throughout the game, but Schuylkill answered again in the seventh. Cieless roped an RBI double and another run scored on a Beaver error to extend the Lions' cushion to 12-5.
Beaver mounted one final push in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit with a two-run triple from Benjamin Ogle and another run-scoring groundout, but Schuylkill closed it out to secure the win.
The Lions showed balance throughout the opener, getting contributions up and down the lineup. Guerrero's power in the middle of the order set the tone, while Klotz, Cieless, Zimmerman, and Hayden Lee all played key roles in the offensive breakout. On the mound, Ty Shuey settled things in relief, helping Schuylkill navigate the middle innings and keep Beaver from fully erasing the lead.
In game two, Schuylkill battled Rockland CC but came up short in a 5-1 loss. Rockland struck first on a solo home run in the second inning and held that lead until the Lions broke through in the fifth. Andrew Klotz singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Roman Cieless RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Schuylkill continued to battle and put runners on base, but Rockland regained control in the sixth inning, capitalizing on walks to score three runs and go back in front. Another run came across in the seventh as the Hawks added insurance.
The Lions had chances late, loading traffic on the bases in the sixth and getting another baserunner in the seventh, but Rockland was able to close the door. Klotz and Yostin Guerrero Solano each had two-hit nights across the doubleheader, while Cieless continued his strong day with RBI production in both contests.
