History Made: Women's Flag Football Makes Debut, Earns First Program Win
For now, the first chapter of Penn State Schuylkill Women’s Flag Football has been written—and it includes a victory.
HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – Penn State Schuylkill Women's Flag Football officially took the field for the first time in program history, traveling to Centenary University for an Atlantic East tri-match. While the Lions faced early adversity in their debut game, they responded with resilience, securing the first-ever win in program history in game two.
GAME 1: CENTENARY 37, PENN STATE SCHUYLKILL 0
The Lions opened their inaugural season against a strong Centenary squad that set the tone early. Despite flashes of athleticism and effort from Schuylkill, Centenary's defense proved impenetrable, shutting out the Lions 37-0.
Quarterback Nadia showed her leadership in the face of pressure, demonstrating her four-sport athleticism (xc, basketball, track) with elusive movement in the pocket. Malak Mowafi, another key four-sport athlete, showcased her speed and agility on both sides of the ball, while Riley and Sierra, both volleyball standouts, provided sharp decision-making and tactical awareness in their flag football debut. Triniti made her presence known defensively, showing excellent instincts and physicality in key stops, helping to slow down Centenary's offensive attack.
While the outcome wasn't in Schuylkill's favor, the team quickly turned the page, using the experience to fuel their second matchup of the day.
GAME 2: PENN STATE SCHUYLKILL 19, IMMACULATA 6 – FIRST WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY!
The Lions bounced back in a big way, writing their names in the history books with the first-ever win for Penn State Schuylkill Women's Flag Football. The 19-6 victory over Immaculata marked a milestone for the young program, proving their growth in just one day of competition.
Quarterback Nadia King was unstoppable on the ground, rushing for 110 yards and two touchdowns, showing her elite speed and decision-making as a playmaker.
Malak Mowafi was electric in all phases, hauling in five catches for 97 yards, rushing for another touchdown, and even grabbing an interception on defense. Her versatility was key in keeping the offense moving.
Makayla Hill contributed on both sides of the ball, rushing for key first downs and making a clutch tackle for loss to halt an Immaculata drive in the fourth quarter. Triniti Freeman and Sierra Wishnefsky provided strong coverage on defense, while Avagale Jones and Ryliegh Sinko made several key stops, with Sinko leading the team with five solo tackles.
On special teams, Kay Lee Morgan helped pin Immaculata deep with well-placed punts, and the Lions' defensive unit forced multiple turnovers on downs, proving their ability to close out a game.
