Interview with Bryan M. Valentine, Head Coach of Penn State Schuylkill Women’s Flag Football
Coach Valentine sat down to discuss the team’s early challenges, their historic first win, and the standout performances that earned Nadia King and Ryliegh Sinko Atlantic East Conference honors.
Q: Coach Valentine, congratulations on launching Penn State Schuylkill's first varsity women's flag football team! How does it feel to be at the forefront of this program?
Coach Valentine: It's an incredible honor. This is a historic moment for Penn State Schuylkill Athletics and I couldn't be prouder of our student-athletes. Women's flag football is growing rapidly across the country and to have our program competing at the varsity level is something special. The team has put in a lot of work and we're excited to continue building a strong foundation.
Q: You just played your first two games, falling to Centenary 37-0 but bouncing back to defeat Immaculata 19-6 for the first win in program history. What are your takeaways from those matchups?
Coach Valentine: It was a rollercoaster of emotions but overall I'm incredibly proud of our team. Centenary is a tough program and they exposed some areas where we need to improve. But instead of getting discouraged, our players responded with resilience. Against Immaculata, they played with confidence, executed our game plan, and made history with our first-ever win. That's a huge milestone, and I'm excited to see where we go from here.
Q: What was the biggest difference between Game 1 and Game 2?
Coach Valentine: Experience and adjustments. The first game was a learning moment for us. We saw the speed of the game, the level of competition, and areas we needed to refine. Going into Game 2, we focused on fundamentals, tightened up our defense, and played with more composure. Our offense found its rhythm and our defense made key stops when it mattered. That's the kind of growth you want to see in a young program.
Q: A couple of your players have already received conference recognition. What can you say about their performances?
Coach Valentine: I couldn't be happier for them. Nadia King was named Atlantic East Conference Offensive Player of the Week and she absolutely earned it. She's already thrown for 176 yards and rushed for 159 yards, proving to be a dual-threat leader for us. Her two rushing touchdowns showed her ability to make big plays when it matters most. She has incredible vision and decision-making and I'm excited to see how she continues to develop.
Defensively, Ryliegh Sinko was named to the conference honor roll and she's been a game-changer on that side of the ball. She already has seven tackles in just two games and has shown relentless effort, instinctive play, and a commitment to shutting down opponents. She's been one of the anchors of our defense and I know she's only going to keep getting better.
For both of them to receive recognition this early in the season speaks volumes about the talent and potential we have on this team.
Q: What has the preparation process been like for this inaugural season?
Coach Valentine: It's been a mix of teaching, learning, and adapting. Many of our athletes come from different sports backgrounds, so we've emphasized football fundamentals, game awareness, and team chemistry. This group has been eager to learn, and I'm proud of the way they've embraced the challenge.
Q: What can fans expect to see from this team on the field?
Coach Valentine: They're going to see a team that competes with heart, discipline, and speed. We want to play aggressive, smart football, execute well on offense, and be relentless on defense. Most importantly, they'll see a group of student-athletes who are proud to represent Penn State Schuylkill and are hungry to keep improving.
Q: What does the addition of women's flag football mean for the growth of athletics at Penn State Schuylkill?
Coach Valentine: It's a big step forward for our department. We've been expanding rapidly and adding women's flag football gives more student-athletes the chance to compete at the collegiate level. It also strengthens our commitment to growing women's sports and providing diverse opportunities for student-athletes.
Q: What's your message to fans, students, and the campus community as the season continues?
Coach Valentine: Come out and support these incredible athletes! This team is making history and we want the entire Penn State Schuylkill community to be part of it. The energy and support from our fans make a huge difference and we're excited to keep building something special together.
Q: Any final thoughts as you prepare for the next games?
Coach Valentine: This is just the beginning. Getting that first win was an important milestone but we're not satisfied. We want to keep improving and competing at a high level. I'm excited for what's ahead and proud of the progress we're making. We're ready to work and continue putting Penn State Schuylkill Women's Flag Football on the map.
