Gray’s 32 Sparks Second-Half Comeback as Lions Outlast Berks in Season Opener
Amir Gray poured in 32 points as Schuylkill rallied past Berks in a shootout.
In a high-scoring season opener, Penn State Schuylkill men's basketball used a furious second-half surge to erase a halftime deficit and take down Penn State Berks, 93–87, at home. After trailing 51–45 at the break, Schuylkill outscored Berks 48–36 in the second half to secure its first win of the year.
Berks came out hot from the perimeter, knocking down 11 threes in the first half and capitalizing on a technical free throw before the opening tip. Schuylkill answered behind Amir Gray and Tre Worsley, who attacked off the bounce and from beyond the arc to keep the Lions within striking distance. Caden Mitchell and Bryce Hensley gave key first-half minutes off the bench, with Mitchell drilling a three and Hensley cashing in a jumper to help trim the deficit to single digits. Still, Berks' outside shooting sent Schuylkill to the locker room down six.
The tone flipped quickly after halftime. Lee Newton opened the second half with a jumper, Gray followed with a bucket in transition, and Worsley tied the game at 51–51 on a pull-up jumper. A few possessions later, Newton scored again and Gray found him for another mid-range make as Schuylkill briefly grabbed control. Berks responded with yet another barrage from deep, pushing the lead back to 71–63 and forcing a Schuylkill timeout.
Out of the huddle, the Lions' depth took over. Hensley knocked down a jumper, then Jeremiah Miller buried a three from the wing to ignite the crowd and cut into the deficit. On the next trips, Miller and Mitchell kept attacking—Miller connecting from deep again and Mitchell scoring on tough pull-ups in the lane. When Gray checked back in, he immediately hit a three and followed with a jumper to pull the game even at 74–74.
Down the stretch, Schuylkill simply made more plays. Mitchell canned back-to-back mid-range jumpers to give the Lions a slim edge, then Gray rose up for a clutch jumper with just over a minute left to make it 88–84. After a key defensive stop, the ball found Gray late in the shot clock and he drilled a dagger three from the top of the key for a 91–84 cushion with 19 seconds remaining. Mitchell iced the game at the line with two free throws in the closing seconds.
Gray finished with an explosive 32 points on 14-of-21 shooting, adding rebounds, steals, and a steadying presence whenever Schuylkill needed a bucket. Worsley added 17 points and five rebounds, repeatedly hitting big shots to halt Berks' momentum. Mitchell provided a massive spark off the bench with 15 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, while Hensley chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and multiple timely steals. Newton and Devin Adams Jr combined for efficient scoring and playmaking, with Adams dishing out five assists to help orchestrate the offense.
As a team, Schuylkill shot 46.5% from the field and 72% from the line, won the rebounding battle 33–27, and forced 22 Berks turnovers while collecting 12 steals. It all added up to a gritty, crowd-pleasing comeback and a 1–0 start to the season.
