Fast start not enough as Lions fall 85–65 at Neumann
Amir Gray’s 25-point double-double wasn’t enough as Schuylkill fell 85–65 at Neumann.
The Penn State Schuylkill men's basketball team raced out to a 10–2 lead, but a cold shooting night from three and a hefty rebounding deficit proved too much to overcome in an 85–65 road loss at Neumann.
Schuylkill came out energized on both ends, forcing early turnovers and getting downhill for paint touches to build that eight-point advantage midway through the first half. Neumann responded with a run of its own, using second-chance opportunities and points in the paint to grab control and carry a double-digit edge into the break.
Despite the final margin, the Lions continued to battle. Led by an aggressive Amir Gray, who posted a big double-double (25 points, 11 rebounds) and repeatedly attacked the rim, Schuylkill generated 20 fastbreak points and turned 22 Neumann turnovers into 18 points. The bench also provided a spark, outscoring Neumann's reserves 24–9.
Ultimately, the difference came on the glass and from the perimeter. Neumann held a 48–35 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards that turned into 19 second-chance points, and finished with a 50–44 edge in the paint. Schuylkill shot 34.3% (24–70) from the floor and just 1–16 from three (6.3%), while Neumann hit 44.8% overall and 35.7% from deep. The Lions were excellent at the line, knocking down 16 of 18 free throws (88.9%), but could never string together enough stops to erase Neumann's second-half lead.
Schuylkill will look to build on the defensive pressure that produced 12 steals and the strong effort from its bench as it turns the page to its next matchup.
