Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Penn State Schuylkill softball team opened its Spring Break trip with a hard-fought doubleheader, battling Dickinson in a close contest before bouncing back with a dominant win over Cairn.
Game 1: Dickinson 6, Penn State Schuylkill 5
In a back-and-forth battle, the Lions nearly completed a late-game comeback but fell just short in a 6-5 loss to Dickinson.
The game started slow offensively, with Dickinson taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a fielding miscue. The Lions answered in the fourth when Kaely Walshaw crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Emily Brent, tying the game at 1-1.
Dickinson responded with a three-run fourth inning, but Schuylkill kept fighting. Megan Marks drove in a run in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 4-2. In the sixth, Keira Devor sparked the offense with a triple, scoring Emma Crisswell. Brent followed with a clutch RBI double, and Jade Weiss gave Schuylkill its first lead of the game with an RBI triple, making it 5-4.
However, Dickinson reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs to go ahead 6-5. The Lions threatened in the final inning but couldn't push across the tying run. Crisswell went the distance in the circle, striking out seven while allowing nine hits over six innings.
Game 2: Penn State Schuylkill 10, Cairn 3
Schuylkill bounced back in a big way in game two, exploding for 10 runs on 10 hits in a convincing 10-3 victory over Cairn.
After Cairn took an early 2-0 lead on an inside-the-park home run, Schuylkill's offense came alive. Cealinn McGroarty scored on a wild pitch in the first, and the Lions kept rolling in the second, with Nina Wilk, Mackenzie Carl, and Jade Weiss delivering RBI hits to give Schuylkill a 4-2 lead.
The Lions extended their lead in the third and fourth innings, highlighted by Wilk's three-RBI performance and Isabela Caruso's run-scoring single. Schuylkill capitalized on Cairn's defensive miscues, adding four runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Kaely Walshaw earned the win in the circle, striking out six over four innings, while Megan Marks closed the door with a scoreless fifth inning.
