Meet the Coach: Sierra "Sal" Kalyan

Now entering her fifth season as a volunteer assistant softball coach, Sierra "Sal" Kalyan continues to give back to the program that helped shape her. A proud Penn State Schuylkill alumna and former Nittany Lion softball player, Sal brings passion, energy, and firsthand experience to the dugout while helping guide the next generation of student-athletes.

This season also marks a special new chapter in her life. Sal is now a proud mom to her daughter and is expecting a son. At the same time, she is honored to carry on the legacy of longtime head coach Darle Cresswell following his retirement after decades of dedication to Penn State Schuylkill Softball.

For Sal, returning to coach was an easy decision.

"I wanted to build our program bigger and better."

That passion continues to fuel her commitment to helping student-athletes grow as players and people while strengthening the family atmosphere that has always defined Penn State Schuylkill Softball.

When building a team, Sal believes character is just as important as talent.

"I look for someone who's coachable, a team leader, and family-oriented."

She hopes every player contributes to a culture where teammates support one another, work hard, and compete for each other every day.

One of Sal's favorite memories comes from Myrtle Beach Spring Training—a tradition she experienced first as a student-athlete and now as a coach.

"Getting to experience Myrtle Beach Spring Training as both a player and a coach has been incredibly special."

Away from the softball field, Sal has a hidden talent that often surprises her athletes.

"I know how to line dance."

Her advice to every student-athlete is simple but meaningful.

"Make it count. Play every play like it's your last one."

As Penn State Schuylkill Softball enters a new era, Sal is excited to help continue the program's tradition while honoring the foundation built by Coach Darle Cresswell. She remains committed to fostering a close-knit softball family where student-athletes can compete, grow, and create lifelong memories both on and off the field.
