Penn State Schuylkill opened pool play at the USCAA Women's Soccer National Championships with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Southern Maine Community College on Saturday evening.
The lone goal came late in the first half, when Jocelyn Civiello converted off an assist from Isabella Tanis at the 42:45 mark. Despite the deficit, Schuylkill battled throughout, generating six shots with four on target. Madison Warnack and Abigail Klokis each tested the keeper, but Southern Maine's Aubrey Gilbert stood firm with four saves to secure the shutout.
Defensively, Schuylkill leaned on goalkeeper Victoria Grimm, who delivered an impressive 11-save performance to keep her team within striking distance. The Lions also showed resilience in the second half, earning three corner kicks and pressing for the equalizer, but couldn't break through.
With the result, Schuylkill moves to 0-1-0 in pool play and will look to rebound quickly. Their next challenge comes tomorrow against top-seeded UC Claremont, a matchup that will test their resolve and provide another opportunity to extend their Nationals run.
